Last day at TiRA

Sad to say today is my last day at This is Real Art, its been absolutely brilliant, and they've been so nice to me and have helped me out so much. Its truly made me realise that i really want to work in a studio environment like this. Special thanks to Sam Renwick (Senior Designer) for putting up with my constant 'is this ok?' questioning and without whom there could have been some embarrassing moments with the creative director Paul. Special thanks to Pav for putting in consistently poor performances in the football and therefore making most of the tea. And everyone else, Chris, Paul, Athilla, Fred, Elin, Kate, George, Xiaofei, Tam & Veronica, Tom & Marcus, Fiona, Louise, David and Patricia. Looking forward to starting my new colophon book job but still very sad to be leaving.

This is Real Sad.

I have secured placements at Blotto and Standige Vertretung, each lasting three months. I depart early January 2009.
During September I was contacted by Manystuff to appear in the Manystuff Year Book 2008 from which I was selected to be a part of an exhibition to be held at the Qompenduim Work Shop in Berlin. I will post further details on my website.

COLOPHON BOOK

Just got some great news, got the job to design the book for the annual colophon magazine festival. I'm going to be working with Lars Laemmerzahl who graduated from typo last year i think. Really exciting opportunity and very intense as it has to be done in two months!!. We are working with Jeremy Leslie of John Brown Publishing on it and it will be published before the festival in march. Can't wait!! starting on monday. The book from last year was the "we love magazines' publication published by DGV which was a great book so alot to live up to.
here we go.........
Hey all,
good to hear your doing good charlie!! LA sounds awesome.
I went to a wicked talk with some of the TiRA guys. It was a typo circle talk by Fred Flade from Deconstruct talking about digital type in interactive design. Hes the guy that did Frosts website which is amazing if you havent checked it out.
Check out typocircle, there is another talk in january, so if you get the chance go along.

Cheers

As for me...

I've ended up doing strange things I'd never expected to, but have learnt a lot about design and maybe changed my idea of what I'd like to pursue after uni.
I began by struggling all summer to find a paid 3-month internship at an animation studio, but when I realised none of them really did that I just accepted that a week of work experience here and there couldn't hurt.

So, first I went to Espresso Animation, who does the Tony the Tiger Frosties adverts & stuff, and I loved it, and hung around the studio the next week too. Then after that some temporary (well-paid but dull fun for geeks) work came up at Dorling Kindersley, where I started out just cutting and pasting into dummy books, but they let me have a go at the graphics which has all gone into the books. After that I got a phonecall from Mother & Baby magazine(?!) at Bauer Media, as someone at DK had suggested me to the Art Director, so I went to help them with layouts for a week. I ended up staying for a month, having loads of fun and learning a huge amount about editorial design, and they've passed my name onto my very favourite magazine (who I shan't mention in case they don't want me), who needs a junior, so I have an interview there on Monday *fingers crossed!*.

I've done a little bit of freelance work at the same time - some illustration but mainly Flash work for Universal Records (BTW, if anyone's really good with Actionscript 3.0 and could help me with a code I've been struggling with all week, I'd pay you!).

So, yeah, I've had lots of interviews for internships, and have received some positive response, but am still waiting (and waiting and waiting) for confirmation of when they actually start. It's pretty frustrating actually. Oh well, I have some work experience coming up at animation studios to keep me busy before Christmas.

I wish everyone all the best of luck, hope you're enjoying it as much as me!

Hello there!

Glad to hear that everyone sounds like they're getting on so well!

My work can be found at www.nicolaryan.co.uk - if that could be added to the list?

Thanks so much to Amy for getting this sorted!

Cheerio.

So far.....

Hey y'all, glad to hear that everyone is getting on really well and doing some exciting stuff. My year out has been pretty busy. It started well with news from coley porter bell that I was short listed for their shine competition. They invited me up for an interview which was great experience and then asked me to submit a poster design for the following year. An exhibition of which was held in October.
In early September I left for LA to start a 3 month placement with National Forest. The internship has been fantastic and I have learnt a ton of stuff while meeting some great people, the occasional Hills cast member and going to some very cool galleries and private views. However, all good things must come to an end and Im heading back to London soon where Im going to have to get the ball rolling again with a few interviews ect.
Congrats again on everyones years so far and a big thanks to Amy for setting this up.

Hello all....

Hello hello all. Hope everyones year is going well so far.
I started out doing a placement at Laurence King Publishing, great time there artworking and sitting in on meetings etc, went to some great book launches as well. Met Adrian Shaughnessy and Angus Hyland there as well and they kindly had a look at my portfolio and gave me some great feedback which was brilliant.
I am currently at This is Real Art, which is a fantastic design agency, doing some brilliant projects. Doing work for nokia, Reprieve, Lily Allens new album, Brightstar (a new film about Keats) and Kick-ass (a new blockbuster based on the cult comicbook). Met some great people here and really enjoying it.
Iv got a few interviews lined up for after christmas as well which are really promising and iv got a place at BASE in New york for july-October, so that should be great.
Hope everyones enjoying their year as much as i am.

Hello there
News and treats can be found on my website.
Tschüss.

Hello

Well done Amy, good job, I would love to have a tinker with the design if it's possible.

I have a couple of links I would like to add. First off is my Portfolio website which is found at www.oliverbothwell.co.uk.

Secondly I have a design blog with a few other designers where we discuss design related topics. This can be found here. The design of this is currently a work in progress.

Admin Privileges

I was about to grant you all Admin Priveleges, but it could be a nightmare (accidental deletions or html errors or whatever!) So let me know if you're interested in changing the layout & I'll grant you access. Not sure if you're all allowed to post links & stuff, so if not, just post them as an entry & I'll be sure to add them all to the list. Similarly, let me know if I'm being presumptuous & you want your portfolio or blog link removed.
Thanks.
